BMW X6 M50d M Performance driven

it's great news that BMW is now selling its triple-turbo diesel in the UK. On the other, the first time we're driving it on home turf is in the X6, thereby marrying one of our favourite bits of BMW (this engine) with one of our... less favourite (the X6). Joy mitigated by a sense of slight footballer-chic pointlessness.
Still, let's concentrate on positives. The triple-turbo 3.0-litre diesel - also available in the X5 - is a monster. Thanks to 376bhp and 546lb ft, it'll manage 0-62mph in 5.3secs, in a car weighing 2.2 tonnes. To put that into perspective, the Audi Q7 V12 (lord of insane diesel power) hits 62mph in a languid 5.5.
But this is about more than figures. It's about what the X6 M50d lacks. And what the multi-blower engine lacks is lag. Thanks to the arrangement of the turbos (two small ones for lower revs and a larger one for higher up), there isn't any lag in the rev range. It's brilliant. And then there's the flipside. Drop the eight-speed auto into flappy-paddle mode, and experience an entirely different X6. It's now all about scary speed and a never-ending torque curve. The instant pace is addictive - anyone worrying that turbo engines might spell the end of gratifyingly reactive power shouldn't be concerned any more. And unlike other diesels, the M50d doesn't run out of puff at the top of the rev range. There's torque and power available all the way to the red line.
It helps that there's nothing flaccid about the X6. Body control is superb, the steering precise, the torque-vectoring a marvel. OK, it's not fun in the traditional sense, simply because there's so much grip available for the feedback on offer, but it is massively fast.
To be honest, the X6 is happier being driven hard. The ride is too firm and the engine note too gruff to suit pootling. Blame BMW's new M Performance trim with its big wheels and sports suspension, the sole spec on the M50d. This is meant to be a halfway house between a full-on M car and the lighter touch applied to M Sport models, but in the X6 it aggregates into too much. In a very un-TG verdict, the X6 M50d might be better if it were eased back and made more relaxed. Better still, if this engine were in the 5-Series Touring. There wouldn't be any dilemmas then.

Mercedes-Benz Confirms UK Pricing for New GL-Class 7-Seater SUV

The new generation of Mercedes-Benz's seven-seat GL-Class will go on sale in Britain in January 2013, with the German automaker offering two models, the diesel-powered GL 350 BlueTEC AMG Sport and, for the first time, the high-performance GL 63 AMG. Beginning with the base model, the GL 350 BlueTEC AMG Sport is priced from £59,465 OTR. It is powered by a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel engine rated at 255bhp (258PS) and 620 Nm (457 lb-ft) of torque, and accelerates to 62 mph (100km/h) in 7.9 seconds before topping out at 137 mph (220km/h).
Compared to its predecessor, it offers a 15 per cent increase in combined fuel efficiency to 35.3 mpg UK, and a 14 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions to 209 g/km.
It also gets more standard equipment over the previous model with features such as Intelligent Light System with bi-xenon headlamps and LED daytime running lights; an AMG body kit together with 21-inch AMG alloy wheels; privacy glass; an electric glass sunroof; AirMATIC air suspension; Parktronic with Active Park Assist; and COMAND Online with media interface and DAB digital radio tuner.
Naturally, there's an array of optional features, including a Parking Package with a 360-degree camera (£675); panoramic sliding sunroof with interior sun blind (£920) and an On- & Off-Road Package, which offers six programs to adapt the vehicle configuration to the road surface (£1,985).
For the first time, Mercedes will offer the GL 63 AMG model in the UK with pricing set at £91,680 OTR. The high-performance SUV gets a 5.4-liter bi-turbocharged V8 good for 550bhp (557PS) and 760Nm (560 lb-ft).
In this configuration, the GL returns a 0-62 mph (100km/h) time of 4.9 seconds and reaches a limited top speed of 155 mph (250km/h). The AMG variant has a combined fuel consumption of 23.0 mpg UK with CO2 emissions of 288 g/km.
Additional features over the standard GL include a full body kit, bespoke 21-inch wheels, Active Curve System with AirMATIC, an AMG leather interior with sports seats, front and second row heated seats; Memory Package and multi-contour front seats with massage function, and "luxury" automatic climate control.

MINI & BMW to Almost 20 Front Wheel Drive Models

In various interviews over the past few months, BMW executives have hinted at grand plans for the UKL platform. Reported by both MotoringFile and BimmerFile, the UKL platform will spawn an onslaught of FWD models. This will make MINI more long-term viable and will drive the BMW Group to greater economies of scale. Yet just how far BMW is willing to go with FWD, and how big the MINI brand will get hasn’t really been understood until recently.

BMW has plans — BIG plans — for such a small automaker. According to several sources (and recently coraborated by “Scott27″ — our favorite inside source), the BMW board has given approval for a number of front wheel drive models in both the BMW and MINI lineups. Surprisingly, this even includes a MINI four door sedan. According to those who’ve seen the proposal, it’s an extremely attractive car that leverages the MINI floating roof and wrap-around glass. Apparently, the rear is similar to the Paceman, with sculpted front lines reminiscent of the 2008 MINI Crossover Concept. However, this variation of the MINI design language will be unique to this sedan, letting most of the rest of the lineup continue to follow the visual lead of the F56 hardtop hatch.

The MINI sedan is just the start of further model expansion. There will be several crossovers and utility vehicles, as well as sporting coupes and convertibles. Here’s the list for both BMW and MINI as we currently understand it, keeping in mind some of the details may change.
  1. BMW 1-series Urbanic Compact 3/5 door – Upcoming City hatch based on the next MINI, making it BMW’s Audi A1 rival.
  2. MINI 3/5 door hatch – Increased demand for utility leads to the next generation MINI, due next year, to feature available five doors for the 1st time.
  3. BMW 1-series Sedan – Baby sedan based on the UKL architecture and aimed at global markets for small five seaters.
  4. MINI Sedan – A sporty four door MINI aimed at further growing the market for MINIs. Could potentially be MINI’s best seller worldwide, overtaking the Countryman.
  5. BMW 1-series Active Tourer – Production version of Active Tourer Concept launched at IAA 2013.
  6. MINI Traveller – MINI’s version of the Active Tourer. It’s designed to show how both cars can co-exist with individual style and flexibility.
  7. BMW 1-series Urbanic Roadster – BMW’s open top version of the City Car will inherit two seats and will feature a rear deck with layered butresses like the BMW 6-series Cabrio and BMW i8. These are designed for clip on roof panel.
  8. MINI Convertible – The F56-generation version of the popular 4-seat, open top MINI.
  9. BMW Z1 Sportster – To provide greater economies of scale, The Z1 will be BMW’s equivalent to the MINI Coupe and Roadster. It will be FWD and powered by more powerful three cylinder engines than what we’ll find in the MINI range. The design is derived from the well-received 2011 Vision ConnectedDrive concept car.
  10. MINI Roadster – The next Roadster and Coupe will launch with a sportier look completely separate from the standard MINI. MINI design language will remain but the bodywork will no longer be based on the hardtop hatch.
  11. BMW Z1 Sport Coupe – A coupe version of the Z1 will complete the BMW Z twins.
  12. MINI Coupe – Coupe version of Roadster, and as mentioned above, more individual in appearance than the standard hardtop hatch.
  13. BMW X1 – Next generation of BMW’s highly successful SAV moves to the UKL architecture to offer more flexibility, including xDrive.
  14. MINI Countryman – Next generation of the global MINI juggernaut, the Countryman will finally share its underpinnings with BMW X1.
  15. BMW X2 – Sport Activity Coupe variant of the next BMW X1 , FWD with optional xDrive and the first BMW SAC to appear as both a 3dr and 5dr. Think of it as the BMW version of the MINI Paceman.
  16. MINI Paceman and Paceman XL – Next generation of newest MINI member will be offered with the current 3-door version, as well as a 5-door.
  17. BMW Family Activity Sports Tourer – BMW’s hybrid of an SAV and MPV, the FAST will feature a “touring” bodystyle and aim to sew up the small, luxury people carrier segment. MINI Clubman – Current car revisited with more style and more flexibility. Anticipated as more of a Shooting Brake with dynamic raked roof and forward looking proportions.
  18. Next Generation BMW 1 Series Sedan – Due in 2017 and is expected with both front and all wheel drive available.

However, for all this FWD, BMW isn’t giving up small rear wheel drive cars. In fact BMW and BMW M have big plans for the 2 Series range. Specifically BMW M will base a car on the 2-series with a Gran Coupe variant of the 2-series Coupe. Adding two extra doors to a slightly longer wheelbase and roofline, the Gran Coupe will set itself apart. This car will be BMW’s answer to the Mercedes-Benz CLA, but in a more enthusiast friendly RWD form. The 2-series Coupe will also form the foundation of what will effectively be the second generation 1M. Here’s the full rundown of future small, rear wheel drive cars from BMW:
  • BMW 2-series Coupe – Coupe version of the 1-series hatch. Unique front and rear style, with a sleeker, rounded roof. Yet still in compact proportions. Premieres at IAA 2013.
  • BMW 2-series Cabrio – Soft top version retains the unique appearance of the 2-series Coupe.
  • BMW 2-series Gran Coupe – A 4-door addition of 2-series Coupe with slightly lengthened wheelbase and roof line. It’s aimed to position BMW’s RWD as dominant over the Audi A3 Sedan and Mercedes-Benz CLA.
  • BMW 2-series Gran Sports Tourer – A Hyundai Veloster-type, asymmetrical touring coupe inspired by the classic BMW 2002 Touring variant. This car has many admirers in Munich.
  • BMW M2 Coupe – Successor to the BMW 1-series M Coupe, the M2 Coupe continues the same formula that made the last car so memorable. While no huge competitor in the HP race, four cylinder will bring less weight, which matters most in a car of this type. More driving enjoyment and overall feel is considered of higher priority than who has the biggest horsepower numbers.
  • BMW M2 Gran Coupe – The baby Gran Coupe inherits a lot from its four door big brother: 340 HP, Four doors and RWD. It will be a direct competitor to the Mercedes-Benz CLA 45AMG.

Jaguar Land Rover MENA registers best regional sales growth in four years

Luxury automotive manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover has announced strong regional sales growth for the first half (H1) of its 2012 - 2013 fiscal year (April to September 2012), the company's best H1 regional sales performance in four years.

Jaguar posted a 21% increase in sales compared with the same period in 2011, with Land Rover sales up 33% for H1 YTD.

The manufacturer confirmed that all nameplates across the Jaguar line-up contributed to the growth, with sales of its luxury saloon the Jaguar XF up 38% on the same period last year.

Land Rover also delivered a strong regional performance, with YTD sales led by continued demand for its LR2/Freelander 2 and Range Rover Evoque vehicles, in addition to the flagship Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Land Rover LR4.

Robin Colgan, Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover MENA, commented, "This performance confirms that demand remains high for our current line-up of vehicles, and with the introduction of new products like our 13MY Jaguar vehicles and the All-New Range Rover, I am confident we will continue to experience strong growth."

The news reaffirms the importance of the Middle East and North Africa region for Jaguar Land Rover, which remains Jaguar's fifth and Land Rover's sixth largest market globally.

Market highlights for Jaguar included a sales increase of 400% in Morocco, due to the introduction of the 12MY Jaguar XF 2.2 diesel vehicle. Azerbaijan also witnessed a 46% increase in sales for the same period in 2011. In addition, Jaguar continued to sustain year on year sales growth in key GCC markets including the UAE, KSA and Qatar.

For Land Rover, notable market performers included North Africa, where sales of the Land Rover LR2 and Range Rover Evoque drove a 314% growth in Morocco and a 63% growth in Algeria. In the GCC, the Range Rover Sport made a significant contribution towards double digit sales growth for Land Rover in Kuwait (61%), Qatar (27%) and KSA (10%).

Auto Special: Rising numbers, new products by Jaguar Land Rover

While sales in China's luxury vehicle market slowed a bit this year after many year of strong growth, British premium carmaker Jaguar Land Rover continues to reach new milestones.
The automaker owned by India's Tata Motors delivered more than 60,000 vehicles - all imports - in China year to date, including about 55,000 Land Rovers and 6,000 Jaguars. The numbers represent year-on-year growth of over 70 percent.
Last year, Jaguar Land Rover reported a 60 percent increase in sales to about 42,000 vehicles.
"Our success is due in part to our rapidly expanding dealership network," Bob Grace, president of Jaguar Land Rover China, said in his speech on the first day of the Guangzhou Auto Show underway from Nov 22 to Dec 2.
"We currently have a strong network of 147 appointed dealerships in 87 cities," he said.
In southern China, the company has appointed nearly 30 dealers, half of them now operational. The rest will open in the next six months, he said.
"For every city that we look to franchise, we have multiple applications - we can have 10 to 15 applications for every city," Grace told China Daily.
He added that the company has strict standards in choosing dealer partners to ensure they can deliver the best services to local customers.
To further enhance its presence in the southern region, the company said it will also set up a regional office and a training academy in Guangzhou next year, adding to existing facilities in Beijing and Shanghai.
New models

The carmaker's all-new Jaguar F-Type and all-new Range Rover made their China debuts at the Guangzhou auto show after their world premieres in Paris in September. Both models will hit the market in 2013 in a new offensive to drive sales growth at Jaguar Land Rover.
The all-new Jaguar F-Type is a two-door, two-seat sports car with a lightweight all-aluminum body, the newest product in the brand's China portfolio, which also includes the XF, XJ and XK.
With its combination of design aesthetics and top performance, the F-Type is billed as "the most beautiful, thrilling, and desirable sports car that Jaguar has ever produced".
The model will have three variants available, with the top-performance F-Type V8 S equipped with a 495 hp 5-liter turbocharged engine.
The all-new Range Rover, the fourth generation flagship model of Land Rover, features various technical innovations including an all-aluminum body structure , a world-first in the SUV market.
According to the company, it invested 1 billion pounds ($1.6 billion) into the new Range Rover, with close to 370 million pounds ($592 million) used at manufacturing facilities, including the world's largest aluminum body construction plant. As a result, the latest vehicle is stiffer, stronger, safer and 420kg lighter than the outgoing model, it said.
The interior has also been greatly improved, taking Range Rover to "new levels of quality and refinement," the company said.
"We are confident that the all-new Range Rover will firmly position Land Rover in the heart of the ever-growing luxury market - the vehicle will grow our brand and build our business," said John Edwards, global brand director of Land Rover.
The company also showcased the XJ flagship business edition AWD at the Guangzhou auto show, its latest effort in bringing diverse products to Chinese consumers. The all-wheel-drive system specially developed for the XJ can offer improved traction in extremely bad weather conditions.
Joint venture
Shortly before the Guangzhou Auto Show, Jaguar Land Rover and its local partner Chery Automobile Co broke ground on their joint venture plant in Changshu, Jiangsu province, which is expected to be operational in 2014 with a designed annual capacity of 130,000 vehicles and the same number of engines.
With a total investment of 10.9 billion yuan, the plant will first produce Land Rovers and later also Jaguars, according to Grace. He declined to give specifics on what models will be built.
He did say that an all-new Jaguar model - "almost certainly a long-wheelbase format" - will be produced in Changshu after the factory is completed.
Jaguar's market performance is not as strong in China as its sister brand Land Rover, which enjoys blistering sales with the nation now its biggest market in the world.
Jaguar competes in a segment dominated by locally produced long-wheelbase luxury vehicles, so "localizing Jaguar products is quite key for us", said Grace.
He noted that the company has already made a number of changes to adapt Jaguar to the Chinese market and the efforts will continue. But "clearly the breakthrough will come when we start to localize a Jaguar product here in the future", he said.
Responding to questions about whether local production with Chery will devalue the British luxury brands, Grace firmly answered that "Jaguar Land Rover customers won't be disappointed when they see the vehicles coming off the production line here in China - they will be true to the spirit of Jaguars and Land Rovers in exact the same way that they are today".
"In English we have an expression - the proof of the pudding is in the eating," the British native went on to say. "We understand what the ingredients are, we understand how to cook, but unfortunately, we have to wait for two years for you to be able to see the proof of the pudding.
"We have built a very strong customer base here in China, and I am 100 percent sure that when we start manufacturing vehicles here they will see it as a natural evolution and they won't be disappointed in any respect," he said.

Porsche Cayenne PHEV will debut in 2014

Porsche's working on a plug-in hybrid-electric (PHEV) powertrain for both its Cayenne and Panamera models, Motor Trend reports. The Cayenne SUV PHEV will likely debut in 2014, followed shortly by the Panamera, according to the publication. We've heard about the Panamera PHEV before, and that there would be a Cayenne PHEV as well isn't exactly a surprise.

The powertrain will include an electric motor that delivers as much as 100 horsepower and a combined 420 horsepower with its V6 gas engine. Electric-only range will likely be more than 15 miles. Also in store is a V8 twin-turbodiesel Cayenne for the US market. Porsche is also working on a plug-in hybrid powertrain for the 918.

Currently, Porsche sells a small number of Cayenne and Panamera Hybrids in the US, with sales of just 1,445 units, combined, through October.

BMW offers X6 Performance Edition and 6 Series in Frozen Silver

BMW has been pretty busy with cars wearing a "6" this year following the rollouts of the new 6 Series Gran Coupe and, more recently, the high-performance M6. Now the automaker is getting ready to introduce two low-volume variants of the 6 Series Coupe and the X6 crossover. The 2013 BMW 650i Coupe Frozen Silver Edition and 2013 BMW Individual X6 Performance Edition are both limited-production models aimed at showing off exclusive tailoring available through BMW Individual.

BMW X6 Performance EditionThe first of these to hit the showrooms will be the BMW Individual X6 Performance Edition, which will be limited to 100 total units split between xDrive35i and xDrive50i models. The former starts at $81,695, the latter at $92,895. BMW Individual adds its exclusive Pearl Silver metallic paint, 20-inch wheels and black chrome exhaust tips on the outside, while the cabin gets black Alcantara and leather appointments with orange contrast stitching. Carbon Leather Wrapped Trim from BMW Individual adorns the instrument panel and center console. Additional power comes via the M Performance Package, while otherwise optional equipment packages are made standard to up the level of amenities.

Limited to just 55 total units, the BMW 650i Coupe Frozen Silver Edition is available with rear-wheel-drive for $99,295 or xDrive for $102,965. This car starts off with BMW Individual's Frozen Silver paint, M aerodynamic kit, 20-inch wheels, black chrome exhaust outlets and black-painted mirror caps and brake calipers. The Frozen Silver Edition gets similar Alcantara and leather treatments as the X6 Performance Edition, but it uses black Nappa leather with wood accents.

The Individual X6 Performance Edition will go on sale in December with the 650i Coupe Frozen Silver Edition hitting dealers in mid-January.
